I found this on Kevin’s website: http://www.kevinburke.com/tools-of-the-trade/
But up to a certain level, I suspect that it’s the player, not the tools, that makes the music sound so good. *sigh

I’m also wondering how much rosin one should use and how often to use it.

Hello, Does the Waterfall ever get used in reverse? So for example, starting on B, flick, and then ending on the c or c#? Or is that heresy and very un-Scottish?

Thanks for the kind words…
Yeah – the combination of an up-close view of the left hand & the ability to slow down/loop sections of videos makes for a really helpful learning environment…I just wish I had all these tools when I was learning fiddle.
Back then, cutting edge tech was the ability to slow a cassette tape down to half speed……[Read more]

I also wanted to add that I love the slower downer you’ve added. Def a huge help navigating the tricky bits! <3

Hi, Ringlets. Yep. Really good point.
When I started this project several years back, I thought that darker cloths would fit better with the overall site design…but you’re right…the contrast makes it difficult to pick out arm position. We’ve now started mixing things up with more lighter/mid-toned shirts for the instructors when they…[Read more]

Heya, Casey
Thanks so much for the site – I’m really enjoying it.
Would it be possible for the instructors to wear a colour that doesn’t melt into the background? Hanneke is bare armed and Keven tends to wear lighter clothing, but Niall and Patti wear a lot of black and it’s difficult to see arm position, which is something I’m still…[Read more]

I’m hoping one day I will wake up and be able to do vibrato. Maybe I need a tendon transplant.

Fred Carpenter/The Violin Shop in Nashville is a good option if you don’t mind shipping…

Hi Uncleted, I agree with all of what Casey said and for us who don’t repair bows regularly there are a few other signs to look for when its worn out. As Casey said you start loosing tone and grip, even with a lot of rosin.
Also the rosin won’t stay on the bow as well when its worn out so look for a lot more rosin dust on your fiddle or even…[Read more]

Thanks Casey,
You know it’s funny, I realized after I posted this that I had a new bow that came with an electric fiddle and I had not tried it on my main violin. Yes, the tone was much better with a better grip even though it is a much cheaper bow. I guess my main bow will be headed up to Nashville for a re-hair now.
There is an old saying here…[Read more] -

Hi, UT. I can definitely tell a difference when I get my bow rehaired….more grip/better tone. I would recommend working with a rehair guy who does rehairs on a regular basis…that way their hair is fresh. You might also do some research on the types of hair available…Mongolian/Siberian/Argentinian…I’ve had good luck with Mongolian.…[Read more]

Does anyone have their bow re-haired ever so often? Can you tell the difference after it’s done etc? Thoughts/comments!
Thanks
