I am so glad to hear this question asked. I would like to hear all of you guys chime in on string choices. I have a set of Evah’s on my little fiddle. It is a Cannone copy from Infinite Strings and is somewhere between a 7/8 and 4/4. It came with Evah’s on it and I have been afraid to change brands. However, I have been thinking about taking…[Read more]

Hi Poetmom, that is a good question as I never have taken notice of it. However a general reflection is that I’ve consistently observed masters of fiddle music tastefully use their ornamentation and with it inventiveness because they have complete control of all the techniques to color the music with slurs, slides, flicks and all the rest. Kevin…[Read more]

Hi–have been working on the lovely Da Slockit Light this week. I’ve noticed that Hanneke incorporates plenty of ornaments: flicks, hammer-ons, grace notes, double-stops. However, she doesn’t use slides in the piece. I’m wondering: is that just her personal preference, or are slides considered too “heavy” for airs? Thanks for your help!

Hi Carl, I’m pretty sure Casey uses Prim Strings except for the E. I’m not familiar with what Hanneke plays on. My string of choice is the Perlon Style String It has a non steel rope core, made of synthetic materiel. I like them because they last long are very stable, resonate, and have beautiful tone. Its unfortunate that strings are just…[Read more]

Just curious
What is the make of Hanneke violin and strings in (Hector The Hero)? and Casey’s violin and strings used in Tennessee Waltz?
Thank you
Carl

Forget I asked. For some reason my printer is turning the half notes into arrows versus printing the note. I should have realized this earlier as I was adding in the missing notes when I played along. Sorry for the confusion!

Hi, Dan. Thanks for the kind words, and I’m glad you like the site. I’ll put this one on the list for Hanneke. She is booked in the studio in April…we’ll see if she chooses to record this one. Thanks for the suggestion!!!

Hi, Scott. Thanks for the kind words, sir! I hear what you’re saying. It sounds as though you’d like to create a playlist with backup tracks to practice with. I’ll email you an option, sir. Thanks!!

Hmmm….do the upward arrows lead from one note to the next? If so, that indicates a slide into the second note. Let me know if that’s not what you’re referring to. Thanks!!

Hi Dan, Well that is great news as its always fun to play for our friends and fellow players once we get a tune dialed in. Keep up the good work and I’m sure you will have more to play before long and the advanced tunes will soon be in your reach. Kevin is an awesome teacher and we are glad to hear that you are getting the most out of FV dot com.…[Read more]

I too am so excited and blessed to have Kevin for an instructor. And that he is! He is not only an awesome Irish fiddler, but he has a real gift for teaching as well! He goes at just the right pace for me and I have been able to pick up several of his easier tunes, as I am not ready for the advanced stuff quite yet. I was actually able to do a…[Read more]

Casey – this is a silly question but I have to ask. When I print the sheet music provided with each song, what is meant by the upward arrows I see placed throughout the song?

And if you have the audio files, you can use e.g. the free DAW “Audacity” to create new copies at a lower speed without altering the pitch, so you can get exactly the tempo you want (and you can also transpose an audio file without altering the tempo if you need that).

His Scott, Forum moderator here. Those are some great ideas Scott and I’m sure Casey will respond in person about it. In the meantime I have found a website that if you know the tunes its a nice mellow session of other players at learning speed so you can play along with them. They have downloadable resources too. They go by donation to keep the…[Read more]

Hi, I know there are already some great guitar backing tracks for some of the lessons on here but I was wondering if there are other sites that you know of for practicing tunes over? Also it would be great if the backing tracks on here could be grouped in one place and arranged by song type or key or range of keys i.e. a guitar backing track for a…[Read more]

Hi Dan, Forum moderate here. So glad to hear you love the site. I’m a multi style fiddler myself and I never turn down a good tune if it catches my ear. I will pass your suggestion on to Casey and I’m sure he will chime in back to you. He schedules studio time with the various instructors and they log suggestions from players. In the meantime…[Read more]
