ParticipantThey definitely get better the more they are played. I got a violin off ebay that hadn’t been played since the 40’s at least. no strings or tailpiece or even a nut. I got it fixed and it was just ok. I was disappointed but I kept it. I’ve been playing it for several years now and people have complimented on its tone. It has changed a great deal after playing on it every day. warmer, more resonant. It can vibrate freely now.
FAN6 how is your fiddle now after almost a year?-

ParticipantI’m thinking of entering a scottish fiddle contest as a novice. I’m not sure that I’m ready, but its all for fun anyway. no expectations of winning.
I have some questions maybe someone can answer.
The contest has an Air(2x), pause for judges, March(2x), Strathspey(2x) and reel(2x) without a break.
I assume (2x) means that each tune gets played in entirety 2 times. That seems like so much. If I play Scotland the Brave, the last measure has a repeat sign. Is that the second time or will I actually play it 2 more times?
Can I play the second time in a different key?
Is it bad form to play for example a tune in A major then a tune in D major then another in A major? should they all be in the same key? should they all be a different key? When someone plays the march in some of the videos I’ve seen, they “march” along with the tempo. Is this required or expected?
I hate to be annoying, but inquiring minds want to know.
Thanks,
Karen -

ParticipantI love those grace note tutorials and the grooves as well. Very helpful. right now the Jig is in the list twice under grooves. is there supposed to be something else?
Is a march another category to be covered? -

ParticipantCan I add to the list Miss Macleod’s reel and Prince Charlie’s Last View Of Scotland (Aire)? Both are scottish fiddle tunes.

ParticipantIt’s a scottish Aire. in G minor. Sounds great with a cello drone.
I’ll check out the Macleod. thanks -

ParticipantSince we’re on the subject, I’d love to hear Miss Macleod’s reel. I have trouble figuring out how to add ornaments. (I’m pretty beginner)
