Hi guys.
A note to say we just wrapped up a really productive 4-day recording session with Niall Murphy. He is really talented. He recorded a ton of great Trad Irish lessons as well as a series on how to chop….9 videos in that series.
I’ll post a little more info as I sort through the work, but for now, feel free to check this video out. It…[Read more]

Thanks Casey for your answer,
I don’t have camera for skype because i don’t use it : it doesn’t work where i live (my internet connection is pretty slow since i live far from town).
I’ll try to figure out with mp3 file + slowing down the video performance. I will see my violin teacher next tuesday and i’ll show him the video.
I’ll let you know…[Read more]

I hear you, Sabrina. We’re in the middle of a great session with Niall Murphy right now, but when I get back to editing Kevin’s lessons, Soggy’s is right up towards the top!!

Hi, Sabrina. I hear what you’re talking about. It seems Hanneke does a groovy kind of lick where she rocks between A and E strings whilst aiming for a G natural (low second on E string)…and then resolved the whole lick to the A note (3rd finger on the E).
I would recommend putting the downloadable MP3 file on your phone or other device so you…[Read more]

Thank you Kevin and Ulla for bringing a new tune to the forum. I just checked on YouTube and see that there are a lot of postings for this tune. A few have done the 2 step version which sounds very Cajun and upbeat. Nice piece of music.
Thanks for sharing, Roland

Thank you Ulla. That’s it. Whoever transcribed this from the film doesn’t hear it exactly like I do but it’s basically the same tune. Go to YouTube and check out “Ella’s Waltz” It is a lovely scene.

Does anyone know where I can find sheet music for Ella’s Waltz from the movie ‘Heaven’s Gate’ I’m trying to get it from a YouTube clip but that a clumsy way to learn it and I keep reinforcing my mistakes.

Casey,
I need a little help with Hanneke’s tune : Dot the dragon’s eyes. In the performance video, Hanneke does a little variation (mostly on the E string) at the end of the tune.
I know that the instructors don’t write their variations on the basic sheet version, but the problem is Hanneke doesn’t talk about it either in the advanced melody…[Read more]

Good catch, RenJenn. Should be fixed now. Good question on March…I’ll ask Hanneke if it’s worth covering the next time she’s in-studio. Thx!

Hi Renjenn, That sounds really fun and you have really great questions. I think a lot of them can be answered from a set of the rules and to talk to judges to see what the proper format is. That will give you a lot of guidance. Also tune in YouTube you might find some Scottish Fiddle Competitions and this will be your best live resource. You might…[Read more]

I’m thinking of entering a scottish fiddle contest as a novice. I’m not sure that I’m ready, but its all for fun anyway. no expectations of winning.
I have some questions maybe someone can answer.
The contest has an Air(2x), pause for judges, March(2x), Strathspey(2x) and reel(2x) without a break.
I assume (2x) means that each tune gets…[Read more] -

I love those grace note tutorials and the grooves as well. Very helpful. right now the Jig is in the list twice under grooves. is there supposed to be something else?
Is a march another category to be covered? -

Can I add to the list Miss Macleod’s reel and Prince Charlie’s Last View Of Scotland (Aire)? Both are scottish fiddle tunes.
