Just one precaution: so-called “sponges ” are made of all kinds of petroleum produces nowadays, and some of these can react in all kinds of funny ways with some of the varnishes on some instruments–“funny” meaning ugly and damaging.
Unless you plan to do some snorkeling and get real natural sponges on your way to the airport, probably best not…[Read more]

Wonder information, thank you! This will be an international flight. Placing sponges in the case is an excellent idea!

Hey Folks, I would vote on those tunes as well. Looking forward to hearing what you come up with especially after you gave us the sneak preview of Cairo Waltz. All the best Roland

Hi Tndel
I’ve flown a lot in the last thirty years, invariably with a fiddle or similar instrument (mandolin, tenor banjo), and have also made my living for many years repairing and restoring fiddles (mostly violins). So I’ll try to combine those perspectives.
Loosening strings is good advice on a guitar, especially steel-string. Guitar str…[Read more]

Hi, Levins.
Thanks for the kind words.
I recorded that lesson twice, but that was as we were switching out studio space…Working out the technical kinks and alll that…I need to finish up on that one and get it published!!

Heck yeah, DR…that’s a great tune. I’ve played on that tune for a while, but never really worked up a good version…might be time.
Another couple I’ve had my eyes on are Cairo Waltz and Mississippi Waltz. All in the same lonesome style…
We need to clear out a few items in our production queue…and then I think it’s probably time that I…[Read more]

I suggest Cairo Waltz. You play that so well, with an excellent beat, and your interpretation of that song is absolutely superior. It would also give non-advanced fiddlers an easy melody to follow, and the would gradually add many of the frills you put on it. It is a great song–one of my favorite (the way you and your brother play it on Youtube).

Just talked with a traveling fiddler and she Ratifies that Overhead bins are fair game even for larger fiddle cases.

Hi, TNDel.
I don’t generally loosen strings…and I never allow my fiddle to be put underneath the plane.
I think there may be some guidance/requirements for airlines on this. My main advice would be to look at the carry on dimension limitations of whatever airline you are flying and make sure your fiddle case is within those…[Read more]

Does anyone have any recommendations regarding traveling with my violin as a carry-on when flying. I have just the “normal” violin case, nothing fancy or fiberglass. Do I need to buy a special case for travel, and what about loosing the strings- how much? I am a student and this will be the first time I have had to fly with my violin, and I don…[Read more]

@fiddalessonsgmail-com Hi Casey, I was wondering if you know of any feedback from the footwork lesson that Andre teaches? I am sure I need to give this more time, but how long should this take to catch on? I can’t play fiddle at the same time. Just singing and footwork is the most I can do. But, I will keep at it!!! Thanks very much!

Hey, Singalong.
I haven’t received any feedback yet related to André’s footwork lessons….that said, I can’t talk or do much of anything else when I’m playing fiddle…so I have a feeling that you almost need to develop the footwork separately as a skill that requires no active thought…then add it in.
I think that if both the footwork…[Read more]

That’s a great answer….practice the footwork enough so that it is subconscious effort. I will go with that. Knowing my focus is limited as well, because most tunes takes every ounce of attention I can give, this will be a challenge. For sure, I owe you a lesson if I ever get this down………Thank you for your quick and appropriate response, Casey!

Hello,
I found a very cool arrangement of Hanneke’s (most famous ?!) tune : glass case of emotion.
Caroline Dressler (solo), Giulia Haible (cello) and the Boston Pops orchestra played last month their arrangement of the tune : https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9GuCppLAyWE (the second tune is Kohler’s hornpipe).
They won this year the “Fidelity…[Read more]

Hanneke Cassel replied to the topic Strathspeys, tempi? in the forum General Fiddle Forum Topics 7 years, 11 months ago
Hi Laura! You’re right… strathspeys can be played a lots of different tempos. If I’m playing a strathspey for a Cape Breton step dance, I play the tune on the faster side. For Scottish country dancing, strathspeys are played slower. I often perform them at a tempo somewhere between these two styles! Overall, I play my Cape Breton strathpeys…[Read more]
