Hi there, Mark and thanks for joining up!
Yes – I’d focus on the beginner tunes first, but one nice thing about how the lessons on this site are set up is that there is a basic melody tutorial for even advanced tunes. So if something catches your ear, you should be able to at least pick up the bare bones of the tune.
The techniques section is…[Read more]

Are the lessons listed out in the “Difficulty >Beginner-to-Intermediate” section listed out in order of difficulty? If not, is there a way to sort it that way? Is it possible to provide a roadmap of where to start with a suggested path for going through that section?
I just completed Suzuki Book II with an instructor and now looking to dig into…[Read more]

Dang – that’s a cool title. Definitely added to Hanneke’s running request list…we need to get her back in the studio for another session.
Good news is we still have a bunch of lessons from her last session to produce – two of which are out to her for review right now as a matter of fact: Coilsfield House and My Love She’s but a Lassie Yet.…[Read more]

Added to the request list…this seems like a good one to pitch to Hanneke for her next recording session. Thanks!

Hi, Gayle.
That sounds like no fun at all. I would second Roland’s suggestion regarding the PT…stretching is really important even when not recovering from an injury – I’d say it’s even more important for you right now. All the best in your recovery!!

HI Gayle, I’ve never had that specific problem but plenty of others over the years. My only suggestion is to follow the advice of your PT experts to get back up to full strength and do the exercises they recommend. If you have some bowing exercises you’ve done in the past you can add those in as your strength returns, or tune in to the Tutorials…[Read more]

I am coming back from having broken my right wrist, and am using a 3/4 bow. Has anyone had any experience or any advice to give about re learning bowing technique and making it better after a break?

Hi Brians, Hey that’s great information for players that actually need a larger instrument since they have larger body frames and sizes/tastes. Also great tips which is super for knowing the potential challenges of playing such an instrument. Thanks for posting on the thread! Roland Forum Moderator

There are French made violins that are bigger than what most would consider to be “standard” dimensioned violins. Many are built by the JTL Company and they might do the trick for your students. That said, those violins will have a whole list of other issues to consider before buying one: They will sound different, may have intonation cha…[Read more]

Hi, Andrea.
A typical 5-string Fiddle is a regular 4/4 body with a slightly wider neck to accommodate the extra string. There are some 5-string violas, but the tone of these instruments is generally different/lower than a standard fiddle. Best of luck as you search…make sure to play before you purchase as it’s the rare box that includes b…[Read more]

Casey, are 5 string fiddles typically still 4/4 fiddle size, or are they larger? I’ve promised myself that if I practice hard and improve I can get myself a 5 string one day. I used to play viola so I miss that C string.

Hi, Laura.
I’ve always played a standard 4/4 size violin and haven’t really run into other folks who strung up a viola as a fiddle due to concerns that a 4/4 size box is too small. There are quite a few taller folks out there playing standard sizes…The only item I’ve remarked is that players with longer necks generally end up with a talle…[Read more]
