From SW Ontario, Canada near Sarnia, living in NE Ontario now.
My parents listened to lots of music from Nova Scotia and Newfoundland but I like all styles of fiddling (Irish and Appalachian especially).

I’m in Nice, France (originally from Suffolk, England). I’m very excited to be back here to learn some new tunes!! It’s great having the loop and slow down option on the videos and to be able to download the audio too. I’m a big Kevin Burke fan, but looking forward to trying some of the other tutors as well.

Are you playing the waltz twice through? If so, you might cut to once through, ending on the A part (ABA). I’m envious that you get 6 minutes to play…the majority of the western US contests limit you to 4 minutes, which really results in some strange versions/chopped pieces. As suggested by alanboyce previously, Galway Bay & The Drunken Sailor would be fantastic.
Personally I would love to hear Kevin’s suggestions and tips on how to speed tunes up once the basic melody has been mastered.

Does anyone have any suggestions on how to keep within the time limits in a fiddle contest. I am playing Gardenia’s Waltz for the Waltz portion but only have about 2 minutes 15 seconds to play it because each of my other songs take right at 2 minutes to play. Total play time is 6 minutes. Sounds good, Alan. I know that’s one you requested for Kevin’s last session that didn’t make the cut…perhaps he’ll choose it this time around!
And I’ve just moved King of the Fairies and Garret Barry’s up to the top of Kevin’s production list.

This site is so helpful. I want to play every style, but I’ll focus on bluegrass and Scottish tunes as they are both part of my heritage. I played guitar on and off for a while and never could quite get into it, but I can’t put down my fiddle. I now understand why they talk about people “fiddlin’ their time away”!
