thistle13 started the topic Getting/staying tuned at a jam? in the forum Fiddling Techniques and Playing Advice 4 years, 11 months ago
So I went to a jam, and it was great fun. It’s a big easygoing circle, mix of Oldtime/bluegrass/country, mostly singing. But I had trouble tuning!
My usual iphone app didn’t work (too much other noise ) so then the guitar guy next to me, handed me his vibration clip-on tuner. I couldn’t find a place to clip it on, I was afraid it would fall off…[Read more]

WestPoint, Georgia
Where the landscape is lush, but the fiddle-scene is a desert. Appreciate the online connection.

I’m an Irish fiddler, but I think Jay Ungar is one of my favorites (pass my admiration to him if possible). I think Kevin is another one. I’ve been laughing too “If The Cap Fits” a lot lately (heck, I even bought it on vinyl just today). I also really like Niall, I just wish he had more of the stuff he does here on Spotify. Those are my top thr…[Read more]

Hi, Brigette.
We did restructure how lessons are formatted about 6 months ago. We used to have separate pages for the performance, basic and advanced melody videos. The new format includes all videos in a single page. You can now move from performance, basic tutorial, and advanced tutorial from the same location now. Hopefully it makes…[Read more]

This one is definitely on the list for Patti’s next session…now we just have to get the Canadian border open so she can make it down!

I’m fiddling on the wharf in Santa Cruz, Ca., when I can get out of the garage. Depending on which way the wind is blowing, I’ll sit behind the bait shop or across the parking lot viewing the boardwalk. Right now I’m trying to get more tunes memorized, I can’t just play Sailor’s hornpipe and Chicken reel all day….Mark

Good feedback, Aysha & Kitegal.
I believe Patti Kusturok plays with a Coda Joule…seems like a solid choice to me.

Casey Willis replied to the topic J&J Waltz – puzzled by guitar track? in the forum Fiddle Lesson Forum 4 years, 11 months ago
Hi, again, Thistle. Back from festival land, and I took a listen.
The guitar track matches what was played during the performance. It’s two times through the melody (A & B parts) and then it repeats a 4 measure tag of the B part. So there are 4 measures tacked on to the end which slows/rit. Does that help?
For those last four bars of…[Read more]

Hi, Thistle. I’m out at a festival right now but will take a listen to the track when I get back to the studio next week…I’ll get the right track up if the one currently available doesn’t match up with the performance…thx for the heads up!

Garrett Barry’s Jig ~
So many interesting variations. Some settings start with a little scale going up vs Kevins’ version. I think I’ll use both interchangeably!
I think it’s F SHARP in measure 5, from what I hear from various players…not marked on sheet music, but it sure sounds like people play F#. Some of the tin whistle/pipe players really…[Read more] -

Hi!
Anybody want to check the J&J Waltz guitar backing track?
I play along with the Casey Willis video OK,
but when I go to play with the guitar track, it ends before I’m done with the song! 🙂Is it just me??
Thanks 🙂

Hey there,
I have a Codabow Joule and don’t regret getting it. I got it when I got a 5 string fiddle to have a bit a weightier bow for the C string. The bow works perfectly well for this purpose but I like it so much that I am using it also often on a 4 string. It depends on the occasion.
The Joule comes with the advantage of being more robust…[Read more]
