Good question, NF. Here are my thoughts:
When I judge a fiddle contest, I’d rather listen to a solid fiddler than a flashy, sloppy fiddler; end of story.
So if you’re a beginner to intermediate-level player and time permitting, it’s a great idea to set a solid, basic version of any tune down in front of judges and then follow that up with…[Read more]

I’m preparing to play in a fiddle contest for the first time… Because there are time limits (3 songs in 4 mins) I am working out exactly what I am going to play. Is it important to play a simpler version first so that the tune is perfectly recognizable before going to into more complicated licks/versions?
Any advice on playing in a fiddle…[Read more] -

Good thought, Dedee. There are certainly a number of things I can think of off of the top of my head to talk about.
We’re in the process of moving into a new studio right now, and I have a new instructor scheduled to record in the end of September. I think it would be a good idea to test out the audio and video gear in the new studio to work…[Read more]

Hi FiddlDeDee,
Nice fiddle handle you have, and thanks for joining FV and chiming in on the forum. In regards to your questions on warm ups, stretching really helps. If you can start from the fingers first begin there, and move to the wrist, arms, shoulders and neck with some basic stretching moves, even to the point of swinging your arms to…[Read more]

I love the main theme from Poldark by Ann Dudley. I have not been able to find the violin music, so far I just play it by ear. I found some music on Musescore, but it was not created by a violin (if that makes any sense). I would love if any of you virtuosos could create your own masterpiece from this tune and teach us!
Please and thank you!

Howdy! I am a newer member to FV and I am loving all of the lessons and music! I noticed there are some great technique videos for ornamentals and bowing, however, I am wondering if there are some great warm-ups that each instructor would recommend for beginner/intermediate level? Is there a specific book recommendation? Would there be sheet music…[Read more]

Hi, Andrea. Good fine tunes – those would both be useful, for sure. The loop memory one would be technically more difficult. The “favorite lessons” one might be easier to implement. I’ll take a look at that to see if it would work in this site’s environment. No promises, but I’ll take a look. Super busy right now with a studio move and a…[Read more]

Hi foggyfiddle and all,
I second that request and may i add “Jig Ati-toine” ?

Hi all at fiddle vid.,
Thanks for all the work you do!!
I have a small request.
What is the chance of Hanneke teaching the Cypress jig as a new tune? It is a pearler.
Cheers Foggy Fiddle -

Hi, Regism. I’ve always used the medium gauge, but I might have to try the heavies…how do they compare?? Deeper? Richer? Brighter?

Hi Casey. An option that I would really like is if the videos retained the most recently applied settings. In other words, if I set a loop and speed for a particular video lesson or performance, it would be great if the video retained that loop/speed when I re-opened that video when logged into my account, for my next practice session. I have no…[Read more]

It was the mediums, I think I might try a heavy set next time I change them. Thanks for the comment!
