Hi, Joey.
That’s totally normal to experience…have you taken a look at the basic and advanced bow hold videos on this site?? I lay out my approach in those, and they may be helpful in you finding the right balance between flexibility and stability:
Hope those help!!!

Just a quick question , when I play a song by the time I have finished the song my hand is no longer at the frog where it is suppose to , its slides about 1 or so inch up the stick and I’m not sure how to fix my technique, there has to be a simple solution, I’m conscious about tightening my grip or changing my hand to try and counteract the…[Read more]

Good question PC and good info, Roland.
The only tidbit of info I might add is that I’ve heard Hanneke refer to a Ceilidh as a term used to describe a dance or musical party.
So I guess the distinction I took away was that a session is mainly musicians…a Ceilidh is musicians and dancers/partying. But I could be totally off on that…

Hey Deviancy, Carcon & Grassapell,
Those are great tips for some medleys, thanks for posting. Another idea we used to use in Contra Dance Bands was to move through a couple of keys. i.e. a tune in D or G, then to A, or any other combination of keys that give the music a lift. The dancers and audience really liked the dynamic of a key change in…[Read more]

Liz Carroll plays the Earl’s Chair after Silver Spear. (Lost in the Loop.) I started doing that, too. It’s a good match, going from D to Bm.

Hi pcviola44,
In my experience each one is different but a lot of session qualities do tend to overlap. I would say that for any time you are thinking of joining a group its a good idea to get a lay of the land so to speak. Try to preview the session beforehand, maybe not even expecting to play to see if you’re at the level that the players are.…[Read more]

I’ve heard the terms Session and Ceilidh thrown around to indicate how Irish and Scottish Fiddlers might play in a group. What are the rules of these groups and how do they differ between Irish and Scottish? For example, I’ve heard that all the players in an Irish Session have to play the same tune together exactly the same, or, well, maybe…[Read more]

Hi, Devanny.
You are correct…we have perhaps 20-30 more lessons from Kevin Burke which have been recorded already but not yet released.
The two you mention are high on the list to produce…as a matter of fact, let’s call them the next two to be released for K!
Bear with us as production takes a while for each lesson…but yep – you have t…[Read more]
