Hi Ringlets, Last session our music peeps did was on Leap day 2020 in February right before it blew up with virus. I was going to try for a Solstice Session but our State spiked so we cancelled it. I did play with one guitar buddy but to make up for it I’m back to playing everyday and have a new batch of tunes I’m working on. Thanks for chiming in…[Read more]

Hi, Ringlets! Thanks for buying the CD, and I’m glad you like it! I need to cut a new one…just never enough time!
I’ll add The Bucks of Oranmore to Kevin’s list…he may know it/choose to teach it.
Cheers!

Hi, Rosie & Agnes.
Most irish reels are played at a fairly quick clip. Kevin seems to range betweein 104-110 BPM for his reels, and Niall between 110-120 BPM for his. If you’re looking for some ideas on how to speed up your playing of these Trad Irish fiddle tunes, you should definitely check out Kevin’s lesson How to Play Trad Irish Fiddle…[Read more]

So how are people handling the session drought during Covid?
Have tried Zooming, but there’s often a pretty nasty time lag.
Two of my friends and I have met in a State Park picnic area (it has a roof) a couple of times, but we’re weather dependent to a great degree. I do hate the heat (and will probably complain of the cold in a few months, LOL)

Hi, Armin & Sara!
Consider these tunes added to the running list…Kevin may choose to teach them. Also – just to let you know we haven’t forgotten about your request for O’Carolan’s Concerto & Loftus Jones…those are still in Kevin’s queue for review, so hopefully they will be published soon!

Hi, Bre. You’re welcome for the slip jigs! We’ll add Hardiman the Fiddler to Kevin’s running request list…he may choose to record a lesson on that tune.
Rumor has it that Kevin may be back in our studios for his 7th recording session in late August/early September…stay tuned!

Really appreciate the help with the slip jigs. If others are interested as well I think a tutorial on hardiman the fiddler would be helpful! Something about it trips me up. Thank you!

I don’t have an answer, just tagging along to find out the answer. Specifically “session speed”

I’m trying to increase my playing speed for Irish tunes, particularly reels. I’m steadily working through Kevin Burke’s and Niall Murphy’s lessons, which are fantastic. What is a good session speed to aim for, for jigs, reels, hornpipes, polkas and slip jigs. I’m trying to build up using a metronome. Any advice please?
Thank you. -

Hi! They are great tunes and are from an album called “Fiddling Through The Years” that I was on. It was 1985 or so. The tunes are Wilsons’ Clog/Irishmans’ Heart To the Ladies/Great Eastern Reel/Acrobats’ Reel. I’ll definitely add them to the list for the next recording!
