Well thank you guys, yes I am terribly excited about camp! – and I don’t take myself too seriously, just looking forward to learning.
It seems they just put the slurs and slides and all wherever they feel, (I might be wrong)
Honestly think I fumbled through classical, I was OK-ish but not good enough for an orchestra or anything, so maybe it’s a…[Read more] -

A few years back I attended a Bass Camp here in the Twin Cities, MN USA. Our guest performer and master class teacher was Francois Rabbath. As of Mar 2021 he is 90 years young. I wish I could share his Interview on teaching. The interview not only helps the teacher but is inspirational for the student. I have contacted them to see if I can or…[Read more]

Wow I’m jealous about the fiddle camp, Aysha! Lucky you!
On bowing…
Yea the slurs are different, like not the way you would think them to be – after being a classical player? That’s been hard for me. So in that sense, I found it important to watch the fiddler. It’s amazing how the sound/beat/emphasis changes when you change the slurring. (But…[Read more]-
Thanks Thistle – I hope so, everything sounds so great on the vid, sheet music looks easy enough (on the beginner/intermediate) then I play it and it sounds nothing like it – have a lot of respect for both sides but finding the fiddling a little more fun, it seems each person has their way of putting their own flair into it (I don’t have any…[Read more]

Hi Aysha!
Whether you are classically trained, learn by ear, or watching someone play the song (note by note, bow by bow). Bow direction is important. Would I be overly worried about it, No. ** Do you need to be mindful of it, Yes.** Bow direction helps you move from one musical phase to the next. It also helps define the style of music being…[Read more]

I learnt classical (only up to Suzuki book 4, not perfectly, but almost up to speed and pretty confident when in tune!) and now I am trying to learn fiddling – honestly can’t decide which I like better, it’s challenging , but so much fun.
I can’t quite let go of the sheet music yet, I try to memorize the tune first and then kind of ignore what I…[Read more] -

Same answer as for Salt Creek, Michael. I know it and love it. On the list at some point.

Great call, Michael.
I know this tune, and will teach it for you when I have time. I’m not planning to make it into the studio anytime soon, but consider it on my list. Maybe Megan knows it and can teach it sooner than I.

I would like to request Squirrel Hunters as a fiddle tune to be taught. Written by the great John Hartford, it’s fairly popular for those in the know, and a bit of a hidden gem.

This would be a great tune to learn. I prefer it played in A rather than G but is often played in both keys.

Hi, Allison.
We almost had Hanneke in the studio a couple of months ago, but it didn’t work out…she and I have been talking and hope to get her back in the studio later this year or early next for another session. Agreed on the mix of tunes…I think Hanneke has actually had like 4-6 sessions with us over the past few years, and I know she…[Read more]

Hi, Felicity.
I’ll add it to Hanneke’s request list – she may choose to record it. We’ve been trying to get her back to the studio, and I’m hopeful that it might happen later this year or early next.
Thx!

Hi, Kah.
I’ll add it to Patti’s running request list, and she may choose to teach it during her next session. I’ve been trying to get her back to the studio for over a year, but this pandemic has really put a hitch in travel!
