Yes, that’s it. Thanks for the link, Casey! It just doesn’t come even close to your beautiful waltzes though….sigh!

The key was the mirror. I could then better see what was going on with my attempts, and begin to improve them. Then I found myself making mistakes in my practice tune, and need to work on getting two or three slow songs in better shape, so I can stand in front of the mirror without the sheet music, and focus better on the wrist and bow hold.

Hi Larry – glad to hear that this issue resolved itself. I bet you’re right…sometimes the caching and membership status (logged in vs logged out) don’t play nicely with eachother. If you’re logged in but the site doesn’t show what you expect, just hit F5. It sounds like you know what you’re doing though. If you have issues going forward,…[Read more]

Larry – I found it! I had it classified incorrectly, so it was not showing up in the bow technique videos section. This tutorial contains a bunch of my best advice on wrist and finger techniqe.
Check it out HERE, and let me know if this gave you any insights!
Keep up the good work, sir.

Hi Larry! Great question. And yes, you have hit upon the most difficult fiddling element to master in my opinion. I just realized I don’t have a technique video talking about more advanced exercises….I do have some to provide. I will post here or email you when I get that up on the site.
In the mean time, the wall trick is good if you are…[Read more]

It seems the issue must have been a cached page in the browser. It is now available to me.

Casey, I really like your tutorial on bow technique. I’ve also realized for a while now that it is my biggest impediment to learning to play smoothly and effortlessly, and to “stay on String” and add double-stops.
But I can’t seem to be able to bend my wrist and control my fingers and bow hold to get that smooth motion. Yet there doesn’t seem to…[Read more]

I have been working on Westphalia Waltz, from Craig Duncan’s Fiddling Method. It has been my first real attempt to learn double stops, but I realize I should get the basic melody under better control first. But it seems to be the only basic tune that the trial membership does not unlock.
I really like the version by Gary Sizemore on YouTube, and…[Read more]

Is it this tune, Zengoat?
Seems to be a nice classic sounding 1,4,5 grasser…Or are you talking about a different tune??

This is the next song we’ll be learning in a bluegrass group class. I was just wondering if anyone has a favorite recording of this tune?

Thanks for the update, Roland. I know a lot of folks here in the Pacific Northwest are gearing up for contest season. I think it’s great to have a goal to work on. I always felt that my playing was refined when I practiced the same song over and over preparing for contests…
Good luck to you in all your fiddling endeavors this year!

Hi Peter, Glad to hear you checked it out and they really did make that music popular and it still is today. The Texas Playboys are legendary in the evolution of American fiddle music pushing it into elements of jazz and swing. As for Casey and Hanneke they really are pros and a couple of great fiddlers to be inspired by. Casey has some Bow…[Read more]

Hi Peter, Yes interesting using the swing segment with less of that but If you like double stops you might search youtube for Johnny Gimble. He played with Bob Wills and the Texas Playboys and has complete mastery with that technique. He also wrote the beautiful Gardenia Waltz, that Casey has on the site here at Fiddlevideo. Enjoy, Roland

WOW, Probably the best arrangement of this tune I’ve ever hear and the swing break in the middle is awesome. Expert backup with Joey McKenzie and bass player, but I don’t know his name. I remember James Mason back when I first started playing fiddle and he was always a good player. He also took down First place in the new Swing Division at the…[Read more]
