First let me say I am loving this site! It is perfect for me as I am trying to learn Bluegrass, Scottish and Irish fiddling at the same time. I have learned several tunes with your help. Thanks!
I have several tunes I would like to see you guys tackle in the future, but I am only going to list one for now. The tune is “The Gael” by the…[Read more]

Hi, Dan. Are you looking in Kevin Burke’s section? He indicated that Trad Irish fiddle didn’t really encompass guitar backups…so we did not record any. Tracks should be available in all of my lessons as well as Hanneke’s. Let me know if you are unable to play them in our lessons, sir. Thanks!!!

I like the tone of the thomastik better for E…but only the E. The wound E also helps to reduce whistling/wolf tones…let us know what you think. Each instrument is different, but that’s what I use on my axes.

Tanks, folks! Casey, I just ordered them. Why do you recommend the other E string?

I’ve had success with Prim mediums. I use those on G, D, and A strings. I use a wound thomastik dominant E string (#129 or #130). Give’em a try….

I know, the topic of fiddle strings stirs up more controversy than political candidates.
But still. . .what do YOU like?
I’ve been using Helicores for awhile. But before hitting the “order” button for a $45 set of strings, are there any other lovely sets you’d recommend?

Hey guys I would agree that is a great tune. Lots of cool stuff in it. Casey could it be a tune of choice? I’ve heard it on Pandora and really loved it but never took the time to see what the name was. Patty Kills it in her version.
Thanks for the suggestion Fiddleman. -

Hey there, Fiddleman. I checked that tune out, and it’s a good one. I see that Patti knows the song. We’ll add it to the list of possible tunes for her to record next month. No guarantees, but consider it on the list! Below is a video of Patti playing the tune:

Hi Casey,
Would you consider putting up a video lesson for Bluegrass in the Backwoods? I think it is a great tune and it would be a great addition to this site.
Thanks! fiddleman732

Hey Edward and Casey nice thread on the Kevin Burke tutorials. Kevin to me has the ultimate taste in the use of ornaments and the sparingly use of them is equally as important as the intricate parts. A true master of his craft. And nice to hear you enjoy the site. Best regards to both of you.

Awesome, Edward. Glad you found the lesson informative. And I may steal that line!

Thanks for the direction to that lesson, Casey. One of the best tutorials yet for grace notes…His description of the string “rattling” between the fingers of the left hand is exactly the conclusion I came to a few months back. Good to have that “affirmation” so to speak. Irish and Scottish trad music is like a bakery: only as good as the…[Read more]

Well, perhaps my expectations where too high, although “The Band” is not what I would call cheap.
I’ll start looking for a microphone, then. Thanks, everybody, for your suggestions.
