Hi, Blossom. I’ll check in with Hanneke and Kevin to see if they have any tips to provide on writing these kinds of ornamentation out. Thanks!

Hi guys. I would say that if you’re going for a true Trad Irish/Celtic approach, the lighter grip (and the way Kevin Burke describes his hold) is probably the way to go.
That being said, I’m a big believer in achieving as much control and power as possible in the more “classical” approach you describe, Graeme. Leveraging that thumb, index and…[Read more]

Hi Graeme – may I humbly chip in to say that if your wrist is lovely and loose there will be plenty of weight in your hand to sit the bow on the strings enough to get them moving and “push air around the room”- and you can still give a bit of a boost with the forefinger even if you are holding the bow lightly. Best of both worlds ?

In a “classical bow hold” the weight of the arm (or some of this weight, as needed), can be applied to the strings through the bowing hand’s index finger. If you don’t extend this finger up the bow and position it to lie across the top of the bow (and then down the side) between the first and second knuckles, then people suggest you’re just…[Read more]

I totally see that it is time consuming, but I would also like some further notation, especially some of the more important bowings. Can you show us how to notate things like flicks, wiggles and waterfalls correctly? Right now I’m using a check mark, curly-cue, and a squiggle… Lol. But, I would prefer to do it correctly.

Casey Willis replied to the topic Fiddling with flat hair, or on the side? in the forum Fiddling Techniques and Playing Advice 9 years, 5 months ago
Great topic, Graeme. I generally tilt the bow a bit back towards me so the hair angle parallels the angle of the strings (and allows me to play mainly on the flat part of the hair). I do this for two reasons: (1) I seem to get better, clearer tone and (2) the bow does not slide down the instrument away from the sweet spot.
I can’t think of…[Read more]

Patrick Clark writes a terse statement several times in which he advises people to fiddle on the flat hair of the bow. Frankie Gavin is asked a question in his workshop video on You Tube about fiddling on the side of the bow hair, and he says he doesn’t know about that. Or words to that effect.
In other (violin) texts writers instruct the reader…[Read more]

Hi, Hilary. I’ve seen it work for other users…did you use the same email on the gravitar site as you did when you signed up for Fiddlevideo?
You might try logging out and then back in. Or, if you prefer, just email me the photo and I can upload it to your profile on the site’s database.
Sorry about the issue! Keep me posted.

Hi Casey
I am trying to open up the Advance lesson for Tennessee Waltz but it isn’t opening, neither on my iPad or my desktop. Any idea why this might be?

It might be helpful for someone who knows how a fiddle should be set up to take a look after the box is played in a bit. They would be able to perform micro adjustments to the bridge, nut, etc., if you are hearing a tone you don’t really like.
That being said, I don’t know that it would be worth it to me to take a box in if there was any…[Read more]

I have a new instrument that was set up by a local luthier. Should I expect to have it “looked at” by the luthier after about three months of playing, or is this unnecessary?
I guess all new instruments change (mine has) considerably in the first few months, and is a review of the instrument the best course?
