I have been using Audacity for a number of years on a laptop and desktop computer. It is a free open source program for working with audio files. I was curious about this discussion and wondered how Audacity might be useful. By adjusting the audio setup, I was successfully able to record a guitar backing track on Audacity in real time. ( I used the “Back Up And Push” backing track @ 110 bpm ) I then selected the file and used the built in ‘tempo change’ plug-in that comes with Audacity. I changed it to 85 bpm with out changing the pitch. The file can be changed as a percentage or by bpm.

Next, I recorded the “Back Up And Push” backing track @ 85bpm onto Audacity. Perfectly aligning the two files is beyond my capabilities, but it was easy to hear that the two files were at the same tempo. I did not save the files. Audacity can save an audio file in just about every format, MP3, WAV, Flac etc.

Audacity worked well and was easy for me. As a caution, Audacity is very powerful program and some things take time to learn. But the basics are pretty easy.

      Happy Fiddlin!

Casey, Andy Leftwich is amazing. He has a version of Big Mon that he does with twin mandolin that is simply beautiful. I do a weekly bluegrass radio show that’s broadcast in Ireland and I closed this coming Sunday’s (April 20) show out with Big Mon by Andy.

If you should cut a lesson of Road To Spencer in C, and I learn it, my fiddle jam friends are going to look at me strangely. But, that’s ok, because I play Beaumont Rag in F and they do it in D. 🙂 I’ll have the last laugh. Ryans Mammoth Collection has Fisher’s Hornpipe in F too. Eventually, I’ll get it up to speed in F and then I’ll work out a transition from D to F.

I learned of another tune in B that’s fun to play. It’s called The Road To Spencer by Ricky Skaggs. It’s a very Irish sounding tune but when asked about it, Ricky laughs and responds that he composed it on the way to a gig in Spencer Iowa.

I did enjoy especially when it was over. 😀

I’ve been giving thought to trying again after your encouragement. I very much enjoyed meeting the other fiddlers and preparing gave me a goal to work towards.

When I saw that you had responded to my forum post, for a fleeting moment I was worried you might have bern looking for royalties for playing your tune. 🤣

Well George, I was even happy with the youth group whom some played circles around me. That’s great news for our chosen passion.

I just listened to this. Enjoyed immensley. After watching & listening, I’m considering selling my D28, getting an F hole Gibson and going back to guitar and trying to play like Peter. Wouldn’t have to worry about intonation anymore.

Only kidding… I love playing the fiddle. Very nicely done, Casey & Peter.
