  • I have been using Audacity for a number of years on a laptop and desktop computer. It is a free open source program for working with audio files. I was curious about this discussion and wondered how Audacity might be useful. By adjusting the audio setup, I was successfully able to record a guitar backing track on Audacity in real time. ( I…[Read more]

  • Casey,
I keep pretty busy working to improve on the fiddle and still keep up with guitar & mandolin. Plus, for a little over a year, I’ve been doing a weekly 1 hour bluegrass radio show. I call it the Bluegrassorama. I record the show at home and then send it to Kinvara, Ireland for broadcast on their local community station, KinvaraFM. After…[Read more]

Hope the musical road was successful, & welcome back. I’ve often wondered where our instructors perform. I’d like to see y’all sometime. I did get to see Hanneke at a house concert last May. Wonderful!

I also have a fiddle from my great grandfather. Has what I believe to be a repair date of 1870. I really enjoy playing it but it doesn’t sound all that great. I’ve considered having it revoiced several times, but I always talk myself out of that notion. Sometime, I’ll pick up a fiddle on an antique store and have it revoiced out of curiosity.…[Read more]

  • I’ve met maybe 10 fiddlers over the past couple of years who have had fiddles re-voiced. I’m wondering if anyone on Fiddle Video has had any experience with that. If I understand correctly, the process could involve adjusting the thickness of the top & bottom plates, maybe working with the sound bar and other adjustments.
    The fiddlers I’ve met…[Read more]

    • I’ve heard a lot of legendary stories about Royce. You can also see lots of his material on YouTube. Seems pretty compelling.
But I’ve also heard a poor sounding fiddle will always be a poor sounding fiddle.
A friend had his great grand father’s civil war era fiddle revoiced. I heard the after and it was not remarkable.

Mexico sounds good. Any fiddle scene there?

I’m thinking of just adding some comment once a week. Maybe that will help to stir others to contribute. So here goes:
Last May, I went to a house concert of Hanneke Cassel that was hosted by friends. The concert was in St. Augustine, Florida. I live near Charleston, South Carolina. So the drive…[Read more]

  • It’s surprising that there is rarely any activity on the forum. Understandable during the summer when weather is good and folks are busy. But the last entry was 2 months ago.

Anyone out there go to any fiddle camps, festivals? Learn any new tunes. How about the instructors? Anything exciting happening? Do any of you have any gigs in the…[Read more]

    • I’m in Mexico at the moment. Beautiful by the Pacific. Nice and warm.
However, I wasn’t able to bring an instrument…reel bummer.
Roger, you are correct, this forum does not get too much traffic

  • Andy Leftwich has a new video out with a superb version of Tom & Jerry. It’s no wonder why this is such a great contest tune. He makes it look so easy.
Here’s the link if you’d like to check it out.

  • Casey, Andy Leftwich is amazing. He has a version of Big Mon that he does with twin mandolin that is simply beautiful. I do a weekly bluegrass radio show that’s broadcast in Ireland and I closed this coming Sunday’s (April 20) show out with Big Mon by Andy.

If you should cut a lesson of Road To Spencer in C, and I learn it, my fiddle jam…[Read more]

  • LOL! George, that’s a good joke. I’m gonna use that one.

I learned of another tune in B that’s fun to play. It’s called The Road To Spencer by Ricky Skaggs. It’s a very Irish sounding tune but when asked about it, Ricky laughs and responds that he composed it on the way to a gig in Spencer Iowa.

  • Greetings Fellow Fiddlers. My understanding spouse & I are considering making a pilgrimage to Cape Breton this summer to scope out the area, enjoy seafood and most importantly check out the fiddling. Dates are flexible but most likely mid July into mid August. Can any of you recommend items to see, activities to enjoy, and most importantly where…[Read more]

  • I did enjoy especially when it was over. 😀

I’ve been giving thought to trying again after your encouragement. I very much enjoyed meeting the other fiddlers and preparing gave me a goal to work towards.

When I saw that you had responded to my forum post, for a fleeting moment I was worried you might have bern looking for royalties for playing…[Read more]

  • Well George, I was even happy with the youth group whom some played circles around me. That’s great news for our chosen passion.

  • I entered the Coastal Carolina Fiddle Contest on Sunday. The very first contest for me. I thought I should do so as a right of passage. Rules were simple; 2 tunes of choice, each 3 mins or under, no sheet music. I chose Blue River Waltz & Casey’s ‘ Twisted Rag’ in Bb.

The fiddlin went fast. A very quick 6 mins. I’m glad I did it. I’m also…[Read more]

  • I just listened to this. Enjoyed immensley. After watching & listening, I’m considering selling my D28, getting an F hole Gibson and going back to guitar and trying to play like Peter. Wouldn’t have to worry about intonation anymore.

Only kidding… I love playing the fiddle. Very nicely done, Casey & Peter.

Geroge, thanx for the quick response. I was watching Megan’s Pentatonic scale lesson when you’re reply came. Yes, I have also played tunes in multiple keys as exercises. Excellent advise. It’s a good work out, that’s for sure. Are you familiar with other fiddle tunes in the key of B?

  • I went to a bluegrass jam session the other day. We played all of the standards, tunes and vocals. There were a couple of good singers that like singing in B major. I found I was woefully lacking trying to take a break and provide backup licks. Decided that it would be good to take some time and learn scales in B major. Realized there are…[Read more]
