Thanks for publishing the first of Megan’s lessons. She has been one of my favorite fiddlers for many years, plus she teaches in an easy-to-follow manner. I have only gone through her fist lesson on the Nashville Numbering System so far, and I feel like it just doubled my knowledge of music theory😎.

Hi Roland. Nice to know Casey uses Prim. About 15 years I talked to Byron Berline and said he used Prim strings for his fiddle. That’s two reputable recommendations for Prim. I have seen where other fiddlers have recommended them, but I have never tried them. Maybe someday…?

Thanks, Casey. I quit relying on sheet music about two years ago. Without it, I find it much easier to learn a tune. I do admit I look at printed noted now and then, but it is not the crutch it used to be (and no, I don’t (can’t) play every note you play). At an oldtime fiddle workshop a few weeks ago, the instructor stated that you really can’t…[Read more]

Good points, Diane. I just did not want to get in to a real lengthy reply, I only wanted to give some idea of what ‘heavy’ could mean. I think the weights you mention fit my above caveat where I wrote, “Typical weights can vary plus or minus 5 grams or more from the above…”.

Roland, this may belong under the “Bow” forum heading, but since bow weight was brought up here, I thought it might be okay to address bow differences in bow weights, heavy vs. light bows.

Diane G is right about the viola needing a heavier bow. It may help some folks to put some numbers with what is considered ‘heavy’ and ‘light’.
Tommy Peoples does play with lightning speed. The slowdown feature in YouTube might be helpful. I don’t know how long YouTube has had this function, I just sort of stumbled across it a few months ago (maybe it has always been there, and I am the last to know about it).
